At Key Stage 4, pupils study a range of core subjects. This means that all pupils will study them. Below is a brief description of each subject and who to contact at the school regarding any queries or extra advice on particular subjects..

Core subjects

English/ English Literature.

Both of these subjects put emphasis upon a wide variety of skills, extending and testing these both in internal coursework and in the final examination. Knowledge of pre-released material is required for both examinations. There is also a need to show how well you can speak, respond and listen. Contact L. Harley.

Mathematics.

The syllabus is divided into short topics which will be assessed through classwork, homework and examinations. Coursework is designed to assess how the pupils 'use and apply' maths and constitutes 20% of the final mark. All pupils will have the opportunity to pass the GCSE and entry will be based upon three tiers; Foundation, Intermediate and Higher.Contact P.Davies

Science

The students entering year 10 will study science either as a double subject or a single subject. Double science counts as TWO GCSE subjects. Pupils are tested at regular intervals in modular exams and the results go towards their final exam grade.Contact P.D.Smith

Design & Technology

All students study Design in years 10 and 11. There is a choice between Resistant materials, Graphic products and Food technology. Some students experience their Design entitlement whilst taking GNVQ manufacturing. Some students have the opportunity to work towards NVQ Level 1 in Assembly using our partnership with British Aerospace.Contact D. Hutton

Modern Languages

The aims of the course is to make learning French an enjoyable and stimulating subject which will equip students with practical and communication skills. Whilst doing so it will also make students aware of language learning and offer insights into the culture of French speaking countries.Contact L. Ezra

Religious Education

The aims of this course is to present students with factual information about current religious issues and in doing so enable them to develop their own opinions on the basis of what they have studied. The work done may lead to an optional GCSE short course qualification. Contact F.J. Andrews

Physical Education

All students recieve a compulsory double period of PE each week. The course is designed in order to meet the national curriculum requirements of KS4. Contact S.J. Wood

Integrated Learning Faculty

The special needs department aims to support pupils of all abilities. Pupils identified will recieve support through staged procedures relating to the Code of Practice or staff recommendation. Contact B. Fraser

Option subjects

Art

This subject offers different courses and these are designed to build upon the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the national curriculum. Some of the subjects covered are drawing, printmaking, graphics, textiles and three-dimensional design. Homework is an integral part of the course and candidates are expected to display 3 completed assignments for their terminal examination. Contact J. Evans

Business Studies

This popular course takes a look at many aspects of the business world and covers the main topics of marketing, finance, production and people/organisations of a typical business. Coursework is an essential component and involves students opening a 'real business'. Contact L. Anderson

Drama

A new subject which enables pupils to develop their practical skills and their understanding of the place and function of Drama and the Theatre Arts in modern society. Self confidence, concentration, communication and self discipline are qualities that will be taught. Contact J.Allen

Classical civilisation

Another new subject which takes the opportunity to look at the daily life of the Greeks and Romans. Some topics featured include Pompeii and Herculaneum, The Romans in Britian and Greek Religious Festivals. Contact T. Hindley

Geography

This course offers students a chance to explore a range of places and environments from a locl to global scale and to promote an understanding of the physical and human processes which affect their development.Contact F. Leach

GNVQ

This course offers students the equivalent of 2 GCSEs and leads to a GNVQ in manufacturing. The main components are looking at the world of work, its structure and finally the production process itself. The course requires a great deal of independence. Contact L.Anderson

History

This syllabus covers three major aspects of the twentieth century; Conflicts, Governments in action and the Vietnam War. Coursework is worth 25%. Contact P.Shelton

Information Technology

This course is designed to enable students to acquire the knowledge to use all the major generic software packages which they may meet in the world of work. It is also a good basis for further study. Due to the practical nature of the course, coursework is worth 60%. Contact S. Logue

Music

Emphasis is placed on practical music making. Three major areas are to be studied; listening, performing and composing. It is advisable that pupils have played an instrument during lower school. Contact H. King
